The key idea

The floor plan is the reference for every point you will capture.

Use a plan that matches the building

Check room boundaries, doors, corridors and floor labels against the current space. An old plan can still look convincing while placing a desk or partition in the wrong location. Ask someone familiar with the site to confirm the areas you intend to survey.

You do not need a highly decorated architectural drawing. Clear boundaries and recognizable landmarks are more useful on a phone than tiny annotations, dense legends or unrelated construction detail.

Prepare a readable image

Wi-Fi Master Planner V1 accepts PNG or JPEG floor images for the Android survey workflow. Export a clean image from the source you are authorized to use. Keep the entire relevant floor visible and avoid cropping away a wing that might later need measurements.

Remove personal or sensitive annotations that are unnecessary for the survey. A room outline may be enough; staff names, security notes and unrelated equipment details can make an image both harder to read and harder to share appropriately.

Set the reference before capture

Give the floor a clear name and order. Establish scale using a known distance between two identifiable points. Inspect the result before making the floor ready for the field team. If a measurement line does not match the real-world endpoints, correct it while setup is still simple.

Open the prepared floor on the actual survey device. Zoom and inspect the areas you need. A desktop image that looks readable at full width may have labels that are too small on a phone.

Handle later changes deliberately

If the building layout changes, preserve the earlier floor version and document what changed. Historical points belong to the coordinate reference used when they were collected. Moving a wall in the background image does not move the real observation.

Before comparing visits, confirm that their floor references still describe the same space. If they do not, explain the limitation or repeat the important points on the updated floor rather than presenting a misleading direct comparison.

Take it into the field

  • Confirm the drawing matches the current layout.
  • Use a clean, authorized PNG or JPEG.
  • Name the floor and verify scale.
  • Inspect the image on the Android device before the visit.

Put your next survey on the map.
