A fair comparison changes the network deliberately while keeping the measurement method stable.
Keep the baseline intact
Complete and preserve the original survey before changing the network. Retain its floor reference, points and raw observations. Replacing old readings with new ones removes the evidence needed to explain what improved or worsened.
Write down the proposed change and the expected effect. A clear hypothesis, such as improving a particular work area, makes it easier to judge the outcome than a broad promise that the network will be better everywhere.
Repeat the important positions
Use the same device where practical and revisit the same work positions. Keep handling and route reasonably consistent. Note any unavoidable difference, such as a changed layout or a different device, because it limits how directly the readings can be compared.
Include a reference location outside the immediate change area. If every point shifts similarly, consider whether the conditions or measurement method changed before attributing the entire difference to the AP adjustment.
Apply matching filters
Compare the intended BSSID and band when the question concerns a particular radio. If hardware replacement changes the identifiers, document that mapping rather than silently treating the values as the same source.
Review individual positions, not only an average across the floor. An overall improvement can coexist with a worse result in the room that matters most. Summaries are useful, but the acceptance question should remain tied to the affected users and locations.
Explain the outcome and next step
Report the measured differences, the conditions and any remaining gaps. If the original complaint involved calls or another application, repeat that application check separately. A stronger RSSI result alone does not prove the user’s problem is resolved.
Wi-Fi Master Planner supports survey comparison and retained observations. Use those records to show a transparent chain from baseline to change to remeasurement. If the result is inconclusive, say what additional evidence would resolve it.
Take it into the field
- Preserve the completed baseline.
- Document one intended change.
- Repeat positions and use matching filters.
- Check the original user task separately where needed.
